You do need a smartphone with storage that allows you to take pictures (we send parents pictures of our class activities every day, 4 pictures of each student).

You do not need prior debate experience to work at Lumos, although debate experience is very helpful if you are teaching at our Debate Institute program. We will prep all instructors without debate experience on the basics of debate, and assign you into roles that match your strengths and experience.

Our goal is to get the students to love public speaking and debate so they will gain confidence, work on core skills, and for many, join their school’s debate teams. Why YOU SHOULD Take This Job:

It’s Really Rewarding to Watch Kids Grow and Develop Skills

You witness kids transform over the course of one to two weeks. You’ll see a student who was completely silent on day one, but becomes able to give a full 4 minute impromptu speech by the end, because of your encouragement and guidance. It’s a great feeling.

When there’s a student who is really shy and antisocial - and you brainstorm 12 different ways to help them get out of their shell, but all of them don’t work, and finally after 4 days, you make a breakthrough and the student laughs for the first time in class - that’s awesome.

    Lots of Autonomy

Lumos managers trust your judgment. You are of course accountable to deliver excellent results (students that really love learning public speaking/debate and really love Lumos), but how you get those results is up to you. You will be given close to complete autonomy to explore creative avenues and to follow your judgment. For example: we have a curriculum outline that you can follow if you choose to do so, but you do not have to. If you have a better idea, go for it. If we hired you, it’s because we really trust you.

Why You Should Not Take This Job:

You Don’t Love Talking to Kids

Almost the entire time you are working, you will be working with kids. If you don’t like talking with kids, this is just going to be very boring and tiring for you.

    You’re Afraid of Hard Work

We deliver an incredible summer experience for parents and students. The way we do that is by working really hard and going the extra mile for students/parents. If you love working really hard, persisting through difficulties by finding creative solutions, and getting incredible results, you’ll love our culture. If you are used to cutting corners, or doing things just “good enough”, this will be a hard adjustment to make.
