East Harlem Tutorial Program

Students shouldn’t have to leave their neighborhood to access a great education. East Harlem is a vibrant community that has experienced extreme educational inequities resulting from systemic oppression and historical marginalization — which, in turn, affects college completion and unemployment rates.

We work in partnership with students and their families as they harness the limitless potential of East Harlem. EHTP offers students a culturally responsive and equitable learning collective to exercise their brilliance. Our scholars build the academic skills, strength of character, and emotional well-being to thrive in school and lead in their communities.

About

Helen Webber and her husband, George “Bill” Webber, started EHTP in 1958. Since then, we have grown from a small tutoring program into a multi-site organization, preparing thousands of students for college success. We are committed to pioneering the most impactful program models in the sector. We are constantly identifying and responding to the dynamic needs of East Harlem families. There is unmet demand for our programs in East Harlem. In the past five years, student enrollment has grown by 350 percent. We now reach more than 1,500 scholars each year, and have more than 200 staff and 300 volunteers working across five locations. By 2025, EHTP will serve 25 percent of East Harlem students. In 2016, we opened the doors to our East Harlem Education Center—a 50,000-square-foot facility designed for children of all ages. In addition to East Harlem Scholars Academy Elementary and Middle schools, the building houses a range of different spaces for elective courses, events, and recreation. The Center is a place where youth of all ages come to learn and be inspired.
